On 15th January, 1915, the 1st Irish Guards of 4th (Guards) Brigade, 2nd Division, were relieved from trenches and moved to billets in Locon to the north of Bethune. Here they undertook a period of training and on 20th January, Harry Keating was accidentally killed while instructing a group of men in bomb (grenade) throwing. He lit a fuse but the bomb exploded before it left his hand, killing himself and wounding 13 men.
